Introduction of Marvin Olasky (speech: Pierce Co. Pregnancy Care Center)

Marvin Olasky Introduction (edited)
March 7, 1997

I first met Marvin Olasky in 1991 when we both joined the Board of Directors for God’s World Publications, Inc. Joel Belz, the visionary founder and publisher of the God’s World Publications wanted to strengthen the focus of WORLD magazine, the adult news magazine that Joel had created, so he was suggesting to the existing board various folks who he thought would add force to the conservative voice of Christian news gathering. I didn’t know much about Marvin Olasky at that time except that he was a Jew who had been a Marxist in college, been converted in graduate school, was a professor of journalism at the University of Texas, and from time to time wrote articles in national magazines which I read. In 1992, the subscription base of WORLD magazine hovered around 12,500 and every board meeting those of us who were partisans of WORLD had to argue that WORLD was worth saving and therefore worth pouring tens of thousands of dollars into it just to keep it afloat. And along comes Olasky.

Those of us in the evangelical pro-life movement, particularly the Christian Action Council/Pregnancy Care Center side of that movement have our brainy hero in Professor Dr. Harold O.J. Brown, our founder. But there are precious few other evangelicals who move in the circles of National Review (the latest issue in fact), The Weekly Standard, The American Spectator, Wall Street Journal, C-Span’s “Booknotes,” the Heritage Foundation, CNN’s “Crossfire,” Rush Limbaugh, G. Gordon Liddy, Michael Reagan.

Our man tonight moves in those circles. In 1995-1996, he was the Senior Scholar of Speaker Newt Gingrich’s Progress and Freedom Foundation working closely with the Speaker and other prominent leaders in fleshing out public policy proposals for congressional discussion. Dr. Olasky’s views on welfare reform are literally legend, and continue to be publicly referenced by Speaker Gingrich and others.

Marvin is a cum laude graduate of Yale University, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He has written at least 11 books by himself (at my last count) and co-authored another 6 books. He has written so many articles and given so many national interviews that I simply can’t mention them all. Probably the most significant and surely the most pleasing success is Marvin’s marriage to Susan, an accomplished author and editor in her own right, and his fathering of their 4 sons. Incidentally, both Marvin and Susan are active in the Austin, Texas Pregnancy Care Center.

Oh, I almost forgot. Marvin became Editor in Chief of WORLD magazine in 1992, and in just 5 years the subscription base of that magazine has surpassed 70,000 and we expect, under his leadership, to reach 100,000 very shortly.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you arguably America’s most influential evangelical scholar, a dedicated comrade-in-arms, and a pious warrior for the truth of the Messiah, Dr. Marvin Olasky.
